At what age did you start playing guitar, and what made you decide to start?
13
First guitar: Yamaha classical
Early Influences:
My two brothers, Tim and Mark.
First gig: Picker's Supply Songwriter Showcase
Acoustic Guitars you own: Goodall Standard, Takamine NP15, Guild F47CE, Yamaha
Favorite Guitar: Goodall
Your Style, and how you developed it: Fingerstyle. Developed this playing style mostly from learning pieces composed by other players, many of them through Stefan Grossman's Workshop and Fingerstyle Guitar Magazine. I also play classical pieces sometimes. I like Bach and ragtime, but I also like rock and blues. Listened to a lot of fusion bands like the Dregs, Zappa and Holdsworth, so I have that influence too.
Practice Regimen:
Several hours of playing just about every day. I also instruct guitar full time. My practice time is spent learning other artist's compositions and developing my own ideas for songs.
Favorite Artist(s):Dave Evans, Leo Kottke, Steve Howe, Michael Hedges, Peter Finger
Is there anything else you want people to know about you, your playing style or your views on today's music in general?
I like to write using different tunings. I can hear the intervals of notes and chords in my mind, then map out those distances on the fretboard as I compose. I'm also pretty comfortable with a guitar pic and enjoy songwriting too. I sing.
I try to stay open minded about today's music. I feel fortunate the exposure I receive from being a guitar instructor, as it forces me to learn about new music. A good song is a good song.
